T hat was a good idea for an article. Kind of a shame these don’t sell better, but they are in a very tough place in the market .
You missed entering the date of the first year for the GS200. That being said, I have seen exactly zero GS200-badged models on the road.

Thanks! I was super excited for this article but just like the car I’m not sure how many hit it’ll get.
Do you mean the GS 200t?

It’s a very traditional market segment, the mid lux sedan. As a traditional MB fanboy, it is also a segment I like. Don’t need a faux-butch CUV.
I am too lazy to type the “ t” (why is it lower case anyway? Some marketing drone must think it looks sporty).

I have always liked the GS and always wished they’d wagonize it to better compete with the Europeans (at the time, all of them had wagon options). Alas...
The GS is still a car that — even if you have an original — would not get you a condescending stare when pulling up to a valet or a country club. Or with the right wheels, a night club. It’s aged better than anything Toyota did in the 90s, IMHO.
Great story idea on the comparison
, going to read now.

My favourite GS is still the generation in between the two. The styling was so on point and a GS460 was available briefly.

Same for me. The interior is absolutely amazing on these new ones but that round body was awesome . still wish I would have convinced my wife to get one instead of her RX350.

I recall the 350 badged cars seemed to do well upon introduction, but kind of fizzled after that. It’s really hard to compete with the Germans in this segment.

Don’t people look for the gaudiest cars at a night club? The GS is a bit classy for that, although if you stance a gen-1 GS300 (puke.gif) it might have the right look.

It doesn’t help the 350(3.5L engine) entered production in 2007 and is the same engine in almost every Lexus and nicer Toyotas .

I just remember a ton of black-on-black ones with big chrome rims in the early 2000s (big at the time...20" or 22")

Toyota has never been able to make a truly sporty 4-door. The GS in its current form is literally a Toyota Crown in a Lexus body (to be accurate, the Crown is a GS in a Toyota body ). At its core it is *not* made to be fun to drive.

The GS is the opposite of Star Trek movies. Only even-numbered Star Trek movies are good, only odd-numbered GS generations look good.

The second gen GS is like a melted W210 E-Class, that gained better build quality i n the melting process.
I’ve absolutely DESPISED the rear styling of the GS for 20 years. The proportions are all wrong.

It’s almost like they aren’t really trying, sometimes. Or maybe they know this specific segment, being very Euro-centric, won’t go for it anyway.

I think the IS-F was their most credible entrant. GS-F doesn’t seem to make anyone swoon.
Funny thing, a same segment German won’t be especially fun to drive either, but it can’t be just badges selliung them.

BMW, for example, has the M5 as a big brother that acts as a halo and sells regular 5-series on the premise of “it’s the basic version of an amazing sports sedan!!!”
Nevermind that today’s 5 series are pretty soft.
I forgot about the IS-F. All I remember was that journalists derided it for being too stiffly sprung.

All of the segment-owning German mid lux cars are somewhat soft - and that’s fine. As you mention, they have the halo above them (I can say my sub-200hp Bluetec is related to a hot E63s) , and although subjective, I will claim they also have better aesthetics to their competition.
The IS-F was at least a good faith effort. Their sporty cars since have either been half-baked, hilariously priced, or both.

It’s amazing how cheap GS300s and 430s can be had these days. Some are in pretty decent shape too!
Not to hijack your thread, but given your screen name – know much about first gen IS300s? How much of a premium would you put on a manual? Autos are pretty cheap but I see a local manual car with 150k miles and 1 owner asking $10k at a used car dealership. It’s one of those “sport design” models that came with slightly different interior, wheels, etc. Seems high – but was surprised to see how high asking prices on manuals seem to be in general, so maybe not that high? We’re talking E46 ZHP money at this point, which from a comparable period for a comparable car…is arguably a much better vehicle. But also comes with BMW maintenance costs I suppose.

Ehh I’d pay maybe 1.5-2.5k more for a manual. It’s definitely worth something but not $10,000 for 150,000 miles.

That’s what I thought too...just having trouble finding any actual market prices to use as ammo, given how uncommon these things are.
At the listed price I’d rather buy a 150k mile GX 470 for like $8k which is a lot more vehicle, although obviously apples and oranges.
